You've applied your self-tan, waited for it to develop, and now it's time to rinse. But wait… why is all that brown water going down the drain?
Don't worry! That's completely normal, and it doesn't mean you're washing away your tan.
Here's everything you need to know about your first rinse and how to keep your glow looking its best.
Why Does the Water Turn Brown?
Most traditional Peta Jane Beauty Self-Tanning Mousses contain a temporary bronzing color guide that helps you see where you've applied your tan.
When you shower, this guide washes away, which is why the water may look brown.
The important part? Your actual tan is different from the color guide.
Our self-tanners use DHA, a tanning ingredient derived from beets and sugar, that reacts with the outermost layer of your skin to create natural-looking color.
So while the temporary bronzer rinses off, your developed tan remains.
Color Guide vs. Your Real Tan
The Color Guide
-
Gives you immediate visible color during application.
-
Helps you see where you've applied your mousse.
-
Rinses away with water.
Your Real Tan
-
Develops through the action of DHA on your skin.
-
Typically develops over 6–8 hours.
-
Can continue deepening in appearance for up to 24 hours.
-
Can last up to 7 days with proper care.
You may look a little lighter immediately after rinsing, but that doesn't mean your tan has disappeared.

The 4 Rules of Your First Rinse
A few simple steps can make all the difference.
1. Use Lukewarm Water
Avoid very hot showers. Keep your first rinse gentle and use lukewarm water.
2. Skip the Soap
For your first rinse, use water only. Skip body wash, exfoliating products, and scrubbing to avoid disrupting your fresh tan.
3. Pat Dry, Don't Rub
Once you're out of the shower, gently pat your skin dry with a towel instead of rubbing.
4. Keep Your Skin Moisturized
Hydrated skin helps your tan fade more evenly. Once your tan has fully developed, moisturize daily to keep skin soft and your glow looking fresh.

How to Make Your Self-Tan Last Longer
Your glow doesn't end after the first rinse. A little aftercare goes a long way.
-
Moisturize your skin daily.
-
Avoid harsh exfoliants and excessive scrubbing.
-
Keep showers short and avoid very hot water.
-
Use Peta Jane Gradual Body Tan or Tan Extender between applications to maintain your color.
Frequently Asked Questions
Am I washing off my tan when the water turns brown?
No! You're primarily rinsing away the temporary color guide. Your actual tan develops through DHA and remains on your skin.
Why does my tan look lighter after showering?
The initial color guide adds temporary surface color. Once it washes away, you'll see your actual developed tan, which may appear lighter.
How long should I wait before my first rinse?
For Peta Jane's traditional Self-Tanning Mousse, follow the recommended development time of approximately 6–8 hours. Always check the instructions for your specific product.
Can I use soap during my first shower?
We recommend rinsing with lukewarm water only for your first shower, then returning to a gentle cleansing routine afterward.
Will my tan continue to develop after rinsing?
Your color continues to deepen in appearance for up to 24 hours after application. Give it time before judging your final shade.
Your Tan Is Here to Stay
Seeing brown water during your first rinse is part of the process, not a tanning disaster. With the right rinse routine and a little daily care, you're on your way to a beautiful, natural-looking tan.
Ready for your next glow?
I want to know how much of the self tanner transfers to clothing?
The foam is green when it comes out of the can. Is that normal?
I love the product. I truly do especially the lotion. I just wish it would come in a medium color. Thank you.
